CoolSport Sponsors Former Detroit Lions' Mike Utley

In May 2002, CoolSport had the honor of a visit from Mike Utley, a former Offensive Guard for the Detroit Lions and now head of the Mike Utley Foundation. On November 17, 1991, Mike Utley (#60), was paralyzed from a spinal cord injury inflicted during an NFL game. Since that time, Mike has devoted himself to helping all people with spinal cord injuries by starting the Mike Utley Foundation: an organization committed to providing financial support to selected research, rehabilitation and education programs on spinal cord injuries. Playing an active role, Mike often participates in athletic special event fundraisers where heat stress is a concern to him.

Due to Mike's spinal cord injury, he is unable to sweat in hot weather and during strenuous exercise. Since the ability to sweat is the body's natural defense against heat stress, Mike needs to cool himself by other means. This is why Mike approached CoolSport for sponsorship.

During his foundation's special events (where heat stress is a concern), Mike Utley will be using CoolSport's Cool Vest Classic™, and Cool Vest Lite™ models to prevent heat stress and thereby improve his physical performance.

At Mike's visit to our southern California office, He and his wife, Dani, met our staff, who instructed Mike and Dani in the proper care, use and applications of Mike's new cooling vests. We enjoyed our morning with Mike and Dani, and by the end of our visit, we feel we have made two new friends.
