This June of 2001, CoolSport visited the University of Pennsylvania's Solar Car Racing Team in Philadelphia. Norman Nanstiel (CoolSport's special projects engineer) met with Robert Reeves, Mechanical Team Leader and one of the drivers for the team.
Robert contacted CoolSport last February with the concern of protecting the team's drivers from heat stress during the upcoming 2001 American Solar Challenge, a 2,300 mile race from Chicago, IL to Claremont, CA. During the race, teams from around the world will compete in high tech and high efficiency solar cars to cross the Great Plains, climb the Rocky Mountains, and dash over the Great American Desert to the finish line in Southern California. Heat stress will be no laughing matter!
During CoolSport's visit, Robert introduced Norman to Business Team Leader and Engineer, Beney Lee and Team Mechanic/Engineer/Driver Dane Carswell, to discuss how to implement CoolSport's Cooling Vests to provide the drivers with optimal body cooling performance, maximum cooling time and minimum driver down-time.
CoolSport presented the team with a sponsorship package which included Cool Vests from their product line and a personal orientation/demonstration of their use and care. Robert, Beney and Dane were very pleased with the presentation, and proceeded to share with Norman the inner workings of their Solar Car technology. Robert even gave Norman a tour of the Towne engineering building.
The day's visit ended with Robert, Beney and Dane taking Norman to lunch at a great restraunt in Philadelphia near the Towne building. (Norman says "Thanks Guys!") So keep an eye on your local news for coverage of the Solar Car Race.
The American Solar Challenge '01 starts on July 15th in Chicago IL, at the Museum of Science and Technology (an appropriate place!) and finishes at Claremont College in Claremont CA on July 25th, 2001. Remember, the team to look for is the "University of Pennsylvania Solar Race Team." Keep your eye on this page for future updates!
CoolSport thanks the team for their hospitality, and to all the other team members not mentioned, that have worked so hard over the last two years to prepare for the race. Good luck, God speed and our prayers are with you. Stay Cool and Have Fun!
